Calculate the correct amount of fabric needed for your curtns and blinds with our simple step-by-step guide.
Firstly, choose a fabric and note down its width as well as any pattern repeat detls if applicable.
Next, measure the width of the pole or track where you plan to hang your curtns from the far left hook to the rightmost one.
Also, measure the total drop height that you require for your finished curtn length.
For pencil pleat headings, double this width by either 2 for a single row or approximately 2.5 times deping on the style if you're going with pinch pleats.
To ensure proper fullness and aesthetic appeal in your curtns, divide the total poletrack width calculated earlier by the fabric's width measurement after doubling it for pencil pleat headings, or tripling it for pinch pleat styles.
For curtn drops, include an additional 25cm allowance for sewing hems.
Divide this height by the pattern repeat to determine how many repeats you need based on your chosen heading type:
Now that you have calculated both width and length requirements, multiply these two measurements together for each curtn panel.
For your lining and interlining needs, fabric width remns the same, but ensure to add an extra allowance of about 25cm on top of the drop height measurement.
Let's illustrate this process with :
Fabric width: 137 cm
Pattern repeat: 63 cm
Pole width: 270 cm
Desired curtn drop: 220 cm
Heading style: Triple Pinch Pleat
Working through the math:
Pole width calculation:
270 x 2.5 = 675 cm
Next, for fabric width:
675 137 = approximately 4.92 widths round up to 5 widths.
Considering your curtn drop measurement and hem allowance:
Curtn height: 220 + 25 cm = 245 cm
Dividing this by the pattern repeat of 63 cm yields roughly 3.88 repeats, rounded up gives us four repeats needed in total for matching patterns.
Multiply this number by your curtn drop measurement to calculate how much fabric you need per panel:
Total fabric length required: 252 cm for each curtn
Now multiply the width requirement for two panels since we usually use two curtn widths times the total fabric length:
Total fabric needed = approximately 12.60 meters
Always to round up when calculating width requirements, because curtns that are lacking in fullness don't look appealing.
In the case of Roman blinds, consider these factors based on our method:
A single standard width 137 cm can suffice if your blind is less than or equal to 125 cm wide.
For widths above 125 cm, you'll need a whole width for the center and an additional width for each side.
Should there be a pattern repeat involved, add another 40 cm to the height measurement. Then divide this total by the pattern repeat number before rounding up to determine cuts needed for matching patterns.
Our team is more than happy to perform these calculations for you if required; we can even create your curtns and blinds and ship them anywhere in the UK!
