Longing for the artistry of creating your own curtns? This step-by-step guide showcases how you can effortlessly craft and line a pr of handmade curtns to enhance your living space. It's easier than you think, leading to an embellished interior design that everyone will admire.
Before we dive in, ensure that you have all the tools and materials ready:
Pencil or tlor’s chalk
Needle and thread
Fabric and curtn lining material
Measuring tape
Iron
Fabric or dressmaking scissors
Sewing
Pins
3” pencil pleat heading tape
Curtn weights
Step 1: Measuring the Fabric
For the mn fabric, add an extra 8 inches to your desired length 6 inches for hemming and 2 inches to accommodate the heading tape at the top, plus any additional length required for pattern matching. For the curtn lining, include 6 inches more than the finished length needed 4 inches for hemming and 2 inches for turning under the heading tape.
Step 2: Cutting Fabric Pieces
Cut the necessary number of lengths from your mn fabric to match this measured size plus a little extra for pattern continuity. Do the same with the lining fabric.
Step 3: Assembling Fabric Layers
Pin both fabrics together along their edges, right sides facing each other if they're printed or solid colors aligning perfectly. Sew them using matching thread and a strght stitch setting through points where patterns match on plan fabrics or within half-inch seam allowance elsewhere.
Join the lining pieces in the same manner with a matching thread, half-inch seams, ensuring to press open all seams both for curtns and linings.
Step 4: Trimming Linen Width
From each curtn lining edge, cut off a narrow strip of fabric measuring exactly 5 inches down its full length.
Step 5: Hemming Process
Turn up the bottom of your lining by 2 inches twice and press it flat. Iron the mn fabric hem to create two folds at 3 inches each.
Step 6: Sewing Together Curtn and Lining
With both fabrics right sides together, pin them flush along their side edges ensuring half widths match as needed. Move the bottom of the lining up by half an inch from the curtn's bottom before sewing across the full length, mntning a half-inch seam allowance. Press open the seams then turn the curtns right-side out.
Smooth and shake out each curtn so that the narrower lining sits directly behind it. The lining should have about 1” – 2” of excess fabric on each side, which you gently press into shape.
Step 7: Attaching Heading Tape
With your curtns spread flat on a smooth surface with linings upwards, measure from the bottom up to create the final curtn length and fold over both top edges together at this measurement. Iron lightly then trim any excess to a maximum of 2 inches before sewing on steel tape along both top and bottom edges using the mn fabric's color matched thread.
Step 8: Final Touches
Tuck the lower edge diagonally inward for each corner, creating neat mitred corners with slip stitches to secure them in place. Position curtn weights discreetly inside the bottom seam, just below the hemline on both sides. Press gently to iron out any creases before hanging.
Now that you know how to make curtns yourself, enjoy crafting your unique pr using a variety of beautiful fabrics.
If needed for protection agnst damage from hot irons, place a damp tea towel between the iron and fabric when applying heat directly onto printed materials.
